Confession Time: My resume used to suck.
I was just like you when I started. My very first resume was using a boring template off of Google. It was unorganized, didn’t show off my true talents in an appealing way, and it was hardly the reason why I landed my first job. To be honest, it didn't help me at all— it was just the thing I submitted because I felt I had to but truly, I had no pride behind it.
Over the years, my resume has seen so many changes, and I learned so much with each revision. But it was when I became a recruiter and I would often critique resumes that I found the perfect formula to a resume that connects and converts (hint: it’s not y=mx+b).
It’s design, layout, and copy. Once this is perfected, it makes it really hard for the hiring manager to look away from your resume and causes what I call a “magnetic” pull to you! This pique of interest makes them want to meet you as soon as possible because they become scared that you’ll be snatched up quickly by someone else. From here, the rest is up to your interview to get the job.
This revelation has helped me and many others get jobs that were highly competitive and highly coveted.
Because getting the job means showing them why you’re the perfect fit for the role over someone else (who may even be more qualified for the role).
